In February the Winter Olympics will take place in Whistler, British Columbia. You too can create your own Olympic type hiking legacy in Whistler after the athletes have left. Not during the winter, wait until winter turns to summer and visit this year round resort in the summer.
The resort of Whistler including nearby Garibaldi Provincial Park has some of the finest hiking in North America with trails for all levels from easy strolls to challenging mountain backpacking. The town itself is located just under two hours north of Vancouver, situated between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains.
Create your own legacy hiking an area known for its spectacular views of the mountains, glaciers, turquoise lakes and green alpine meadows covered with wild flowers. As with all mountain wilderness hiking be prepared as the weather can change quickly. Watch out for bears as well, it is suggested that you make some noise along the trail so that the bears can hear you and not be surprised.
Some of the trails that may challenge you include Black Tusk Meadows in Giribaldi Provincial Park. With elevation gains of over 1500 m (4940 feet) it will take experienced hikers a long day to complete the main section of the trail.
For the intermediate level hikers take the gondola up Blackcomb Mountain to access the Overlord Trail with a great view of the glacier of the same name. This trail connects to a number of other high alpine trails offering views of the rugged mountain scenery.
If you want your legacy to be a little easier try the Cheakamus Lake trail which takes you on a 16 km easy walk around the lake. And there are numerous other trails to keep you busy during a one week walking holiday.
After hiking, enjoy Whistler Village with its restaurants, shops and other attractions which include golf, canoeing, mountain biking and fishing. Of course, you will want to see the sites where all those gold medals were won in February.
Visit Whistler in 2010 and create your own legacy on the hiking trails. Give yourself a gold medal for your efforts, you deserve it.
